Cancer is Sew Done: Thanks for Joining the Fight

I have had a nagging voice in my head for the past two years to do something. To give back. Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation developed treatments that allowed my 5-year-old niece to beat neuroblastoma, a cancer that commonly affects infants and toddlers. Two years ago, I had huge hopes of initiating a fabric line that would benefit Alex's Lemonade and actually got the support of a then up-and-coming fabric-designer (now a superstar) and the fabric manufacturer. The idea got lost in the shuffle. So today I cast it out to the universe. Perhaps the stars will align and one day soon I will read about a fabulous new fabric line to benefit Alex's Lemonade...

Still the voice nagged at me. "So the fabric line thing flopped. Do something else."

Alex's Lemonade, for those of you who don't know, was started by then 4-year-old Alexandra "Alex" Scott who wanted to raise money to give to her doctors so that they could help kids with cancer. She looked beyond her own fight with the disease and wanted to help others. Amazing. What did she do? She sold lemonade. She kept it simple. Although she would ultimately lose her fight with cancer, her drive to "fight childhood cancer one cup at a time" has been adopted by hundreds of thousands of people who have raised millions of dollars for childhood cancer research and treatment. Cups of lemonade have saved lives.

Keep it simple. What could I do with fabric?

Blocks. Blocks could become quilts and those quilts could be sold to raise money for Alex's Lemonade. One block at a time. It was so simple, a duh moment if ever I had one. Cancer Is Sew Done was born. My sister and I put the call out there, and 45 fabulously generous people have joined our virtual quilting bee. Along the way we were inspired by Block Party!, a group of totally awesome modern quilters, who have pioneered the virtual quilting bee. So far it's been a great experience, and we're just getting started.

I would just like to thank everyone who has joined Cancer Is Sew Done and helped to spread the word about our little bee. Whether you simply wanted to try something new or your life has been affected by cancer, your generosity is inspiring. We should start piecing the first batch of quilt tops next month and will share the details of our virtual quilt show/auction in the coming months.

Make a block. Take a stand.

These people have joined the fight. Have you?
